Who is Mirza Shafi Vazeh (1794-1852)?
– He has studied in the madrasa, but was dismissed for his negative attitude to religious beliefs. For some time, he was a calligrapher in Ganja. He taught M.F. Akhundov a penmanship. Mirza Shafi Vazeh disoriented him from the idea of becoming a clergy,

Vazeh moved to Tiflis in 1840 and taught the Azerbaijani and Persian languages at the province school. In 1848, he returned to Ganja, taught at the province school, went to Tiflis in 1850, and taught the Azerbaijani and Persian languages at the gymnasium.

Mirza Shafi founded a literary-philosophical assembly called Divani-Hikmet in Ganja. Frequent change of place of residence further expanded the scope of the assembly. The Assembly also operated in Tbilisi. Abasgulu Agha Bakikhanov, Mirza Fatali Akhundzadeh and other Azerbaijani intellectuals attended the assembly. At one of the conventions, a German orientalist Barensteat who had come to the Caucasus, told Mirza Shafi Vazeh, that he was hoping to get Persian lessons from him. Thus he became a pupil of Mirza Shafi Vazeh. Later, F. Bärensted translated Mirza Shafi Vazeh’s works into German and published in Berlin, entitled “Mirza Shafi Songs” (“DiC Lider des Mirza Sehaffy”, Berlin, 1851) and “Mirzah Shafi’s heritage” (Berlin, 1875 ).
