– What was the reason for the establishment of Russian-Azerbaijani schools?
Enlightenment movement, founded by Abbasqulu Agha Bakikhanov, Mirza Shafi Vazeh, Mirza Fatali Akhundzadeh, Ismayil bey Gutgashinli and others, influenced all layers of public-pedagogical ideas at the end of the XIX century and formed the national consciousness of the people. Educators and their followers realized that enlightenment of the nation was the most important condition for nation’s progress.Close familiarization with Russian culture has led to the emergence of new schools in Azerbaijan, Russian-Azerbaijani schools. Such a school was first opened by Taihitdin Mamleyev in Salahli village of Gazakh (1875), then in 1887 in Baku. The school started operating in October of the same year. This was a special Russian-Azerbaijani school of the third kind. 60 students were enrolled in the school in the first months, and shortly afterwards, their number reached 70. The school curriculum included mother tongue, Russian and Persian languages, history, geography, history, and Shari’ah subjects.
