An international seminar on “Spectral theory and its applications” dedicated to the 80th anniversary of prominent mathematician scientist, academician Mirabbas Gasymov has started today at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of ANAS. The event was organized by the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of ANAS, Applied Mathematics Department of Baku State University, by the Department of General and Applied Mathematics of the Oil and Industrial University and the Department of Mathematics of Khazar University.
At the event, where scientists and specialists from Azerbaijan, US, Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Irag and other countries participated, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Misir Mardanov spoke about the significant life path of the outstanding scientist M. Gasymov, his scientific work, his achievements. He noted that in 1964 in M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University M. Gasymov defended his Ph. degree dissertation “The solution of Sturm-Liouville equation with respect to two spectra”. Based on the special decision of the scientific council, the work was rated as “Outstanding Work.” In that year he started working as an assistant to the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and in 1965 he was selected as a senior teacher at the Department of Mathematics at the F.E. Dzerzhinski Military Engineering Academy. In 1967, in Moscow state University M. Gasymov defended his doctor degree dissertation “Some properties of self-and not self adjoint operators”. This paper has been translated into English in the USA. The official opponents of the dissertation were famous mathematicians A.K. Kostyuchenko, V.M. Marchenko, M.N. Naymark. He was the professor of the Azerbaijan State University since September 1968. M. Gasymov has been the head of the Applied Mathematics Department since 1972 (till 2007). In 1970-1976 he was the head of the department of partial differential equations at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. Mirabbas Gasymov was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan in 1980. He was elected as an Acting Member of the Academy of Sciences in 1989. In 1990-1992, the rector of BSU, the dean of Mechanics and Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics BSU, and First Deputy Minister of Education in different years. Gasymov was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 1990-1995. Academician M. Gasymov is the author of more than 100 scientific articles.
About 70 candidates and doctoral dissertations were defended under his leadership. He represented Azerbaijani science at international symposiums, conferences and forums.
In the seminar the scientific reports of famous scholars B.S. Mityagin, A. Shkalikov, Ya. T. Sultanayev, S. Mirzayev, H.A. Isayev, A. Aktyamov, Q. Mirzayev, V.K. Kalantrov and others were listened. Then the seminar continued its work in three sections.
