Today, at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of ANAS, the book of the founder of the Azerbaijan Mathematical School, outstanding mathematician scientist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Honored Scientist, Academician Zahid Ismayil oglu Khalilov, published in Moscow at the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of URSS, “Fundamentals of Functional Analysis” was presented to the public.
Director of the institute, corresponding member of ANAS, professor Misir Mardanov opened the meeting and said that academician Zahid Khalilov was one of the rare personalities of the great intellectuals who had played a special role in the development of mathematical sciences of Azerbaijan.
Professor Misir Mardanov made a report on “The role of Zahid Ismail oglu Khalilov in the development of mathematical science”. He noted that Zahid Khalilov, the founder of the Azerbaijani mathematical school, has received fundamental results in various fields of mathematics. These results have led to new studies of new generation mathematicians and have given them growth.
Zahid Khalilov was the first Azerbaijani mathematician scientist in Azerbaijan who received the degree of doctor of physico-mathematical sciences. The main feature of his scientific activity was that he realized the need for a complex approach to research. Zahid Khalilov, who has extensive knowledge, has achieved a perfect balance between fundamental research in mathematical fields and solving important application problems. His results obtained with his colleagues were the basis of the functional analysis and its applications, and played a major role in the development of science.
He was the author of more than 80 major scientific works published in the prestigious journals of the time. Zahid Khalilov’s scientific researches were on functional analysis, differential and integral equations, and mathematical theory of mathematical physics and mechanics, automatic control systems.
In 1949, Misir Mardanov pointed out that the book “Fundamentals of Functional Analysis” functional analysis was the first book in functional analysis in the USSR published by Zahid Khalilov. The textbook was published in the Russian publishing house of the Azerbaijan State University. He noted that the book was published for the second time in the Moscow publishing house “Physics and Mathematics heritage” in Moscow by the decision of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of ANAS.
Professor Zahid Khalilov has been working as director of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR since 1967 to the end of his life. Today, it is gratifying that we have met at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics in order to commemorate the great scientist, each of us is morally obliged to constantly recite the scientist and introduce him to future generations.
The director of the Institute of Geography of ANAS, academician Ramiz Mammadov, professors Mammad Bayramoglu, Sabir Mirzayev, Ramiz Aslanov, Akbar Aliyev, Araz Aliyev, Hidayat Huseynov and dean of the Mechanics and Mathematics faculty of Baku State University Professor Nizamaddin Iskenderov spoke about the scientific and pedagogical activity, high human qualities of the scientist and shared their memories about him.
Finally, the academician’s son, Hikmet Khalilov, who spoke on behalf of the family, expressed deep gratitude to the event organizers and participants on behalf of the scientist’s family for the high respect and reverence shown.
